Biography

Gerritie was born in 1665,[1] the daughter of Hendrick Cornelissen Van Buren and Elizabeth Van Slyck Van Buren. She probably was baptized and later married at the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, New York, but these events would have occurred during a period for which the Albany church records were lost.

She married Jacob Jacobse Schermerhorn. After the marriage, they settled in Schodack (Rensselaer County, New York) on property belonging to Jacob's father, Jacob Janse Schermerhorn. In his will, written in 1688, Jacob Janse Schermerhorn stated: "I do freely remit and discharge my son Jacob Schermerhorn who lives upon my farm at Schodack of ye rent which he is owing for ye same and which will be due to ye day of my decease, not willing that my executrix or administrator shall any way molest him, the said Jacob Schermerhorn, Jr., or his heirs for ye same." Jacob Jacobse Schermerhorn came into possession of the property in 1700. [2]

Gerritie and Jacob Jacobse had eight children of record: Catalyntje (baptized 1683), Jacob (baptized 1685), Hendrick (baptized 1687), Cornelius (baptized 1689), Jannetie (baptized 1694), Elizabeth (baptized 1698), Johannes (baptized 1700), and Reyer (baptized 1702).[3]
